Creating a Resume

a part of the CA 4-H Computer Corps Workshop Series

Goals

Objective #1: students will learn the process to compile information to complete a resume.
Objective #2: students will create a resume for a desired position.


Description

In the business world a good resume can make the difference between getting an interview or getting passed by. This lesson teaches youth to prepare a comprehensive resume in Microsoft Word.


Lesson Plan

Introduction
Overview of Goals-Quick Discussion of what they expect out of the session 5 minutes
  1. What is a resume and what is it used for.
    • A resume is a summary of your skills and ability to perform a job
    • Used to get a interview
  2. Skills
    1. Activities performed (Job, Volunteer, Hobby, TA, Clubs, Chores, etc..)
    2. List skills you used to perform these activities.
      • Sample skills: planning, leadership, communication, teaching, problem solving, creating, writing, managing, selling, budgeting, record keeping, supervising
  3. Personal Qualifications
    1. List Personal Characteristics
      • Sample Characteristics: reliable, organized, motivated, imaginative, intelligent, thorough, loyal, friendly, dedicated, honest, calm, clever, productive, diplomatic
  4. Work Experience
    1. List the following for work experience: job title, employer name, dates employed, responsibilities, accomplishments
    2. Use action words: developed, performed, designed, operated, supervised, assisted, organized, built, trained, negotiated, planned, streamlined, coordinated, authored
  5. Education
    1. List education or training received: name and address of school, date completed, honors or awards received, specific courses related to job applying for
  6. Other Related Information
    1. List any organizational memberships, special awards, hobbies, volunteer work, personal accomplishments
  7. References
    1. List work or personal reference (2 each listing name address and phone)
  8. Qualifications (note: have students pick a job to apply for)
    1. Obtain qualifications needed to perform the position being applied for.
    2. List your qualifications needed for the position being applied for.
  9. Job Objective
    1. Listing at top of resume
      1. Should be brief
      2. Should include what you will bring to the company (why they need you)
      3. Should include title of the position applying for
  10. Qualification Summary
    1. Compile a summary of your qualifications from your skills, personal qualifications, work or other experience, and other related information
    2. Order this information to fit the qualifications for the position being applied for (the most important to least important)
  11. More Assets
    1. List accomplishments, personal information, and references
  12. Create Resumes
  13. Computerized Resume Banks Ð Internet Job Boards
    1. Use key words and words used in the job description (word, excel, programming)
    2. Use white paper, 81/2 by 11, bold or all caps for emphasis, laser printer, a simple font
    3. Do not use italics, graphics, condensed type, smaller than 10 font, fax, fold, abbreviations
    4. Check for the format desired to transmit your resume (HTML, DOC, TXT, Email Att.)
  14. Cover Letters
    1. Include date and employer name, address and contact person
    2. Why are you sending your resume, and how you know about the position, job flyer, newspaper article
    3. What do you have to offer this employer for this position (skills and qualifications)
    4. How does the employer reach you to set up a interview
    5. Closing, Sincerely, your name
