Creating a Resume

Goals
Objective #1: students will learn the process to compile information to complete a resume.
Objective #2: students will create a resume for a desired position.
Description
In the business world a good resume can make the difference between getting an interview or getting passed by. This lesson teaches youth to prepare a comprehensive resume in Microsoft Word.
Lesson Plan
Introduction
Overview of Goals-Quick Discussion of what they expect out of the session 5 minutes
- What is a resume and what is it used for.
- A resume is a summary of your skills and ability to perform a job
- Used to get a interview
- Skills
- Activities performed (Job, Volunteer, Hobby, TA, Clubs, Chores, etc..)
- List skills you used to perform these activities.
- Sample skills: planning, leadership, communication, teaching, problem solving, creating, writing, managing, selling, budgeting, record keeping, supervising
- Personal Qualifications
- List Personal Characteristics
- Sample Characteristics: reliable, organized, motivated, imaginative, intelligent, thorough, loyal, friendly, dedicated, honest, calm, clever, productive, diplomatic
- Work Experience
- List the following for work experience: job title, employer name, dates employed, responsibilities, accomplishments
- Use action words: developed, performed, designed, operated, supervised, assisted, organized, built, trained, negotiated, planned, streamlined, coordinated, authored
- Education
- List education or training received: name and address of school, date completed, honors or awards received, specific courses related to job applying for
- Other Related Information
- List any organizational memberships, special awards, hobbies, volunteer work, personal accomplishments
- References
- List work or personal reference (2 each listing name address and phone)
- Qualifications (note: have students pick a job to apply for)
- Obtain qualifications needed to perform the position being applied for.
- List your qualifications needed for the position being applied for.
- Job Objective
- Listing at top of resume
- Should be brief
- Should include what you will bring to the company (why they need you)
- Should include title of the position applying for
- Qualification Summary
- Compile a summary of your qualifications from your skills, personal qualifications, work or other experience, and other related information
- Order this information to fit the qualifications for the position being applied for (the most important to least important)
- More Assets
- List accomplishments, personal information, and references
- Create Resumes
- Computerized Resume Banks Ð Internet Job Boards
- Use key words and words used in the job description (word, excel, programming)
- Use white paper, 81/2 by 11, bold or all caps for emphasis, laser printer, a simple font
- Do not use italics, graphics, condensed type, smaller than 10 font, fax, fold, abbreviations
- Check for the format desired to transmit your resume (HTML, DOC, TXT, Email Att.)
- Cover Letters
- Include date and employer name, address and contact person
- Why are you sending your resume, and how you know about the position, job flyer, newspaper article
- What do you have to offer this employer for this position (skills and qualifications)
- How does the employer reach you to set up a interview
- Closing, Sincerely, your name
